This week was full of science activities for the children at the Kids Club. The solar eclipse on Monday was a perfect opportunity for activities related to the eclipse and astronomy. The students learned about the sun and the moon and their respective orbits that are responsible for the eclipse, they created diagrams and made art projects. We had special glasses that were donated for the children to safely view the eclipse. Although classes at the primary were cancelled for that day, we had classes at the Kids Club. Many parents kept their children at home due to fears and superstitions, however the rest of the week the lessons did much to dispel these sentiments and answer many questions for the children. The children also had a chance to enjoy the results of another science project creating crystals that was started before the vacations. Over the last few weeks the crystals made from solutions of salt or sugar had a chance to grow. The children were fascinated by the formations they produced.
Registration and screening for the annual free dental clinic began this week as well. The dentists visiting from the United States will be providing this valuable service for local children the first week of May.
